Th Litl Red Hen

Litl Red Hen livd in a
barnyard. She spent aulmoest all of
her tiem wauking about th barnyard

in

her

picketty-pecketty

fashon,

scraching

everywhaer

for

wurms.

he deerly luvd fat, delicious wurms and felt thae wer absolootly nesesaery to th helth of her children. As
ofen as

she

found a

wurm

she

wuud

call

“Chuk-chuk-chuk!” to her chickies.

hen thae wer gatherd about her, she wuud distribute chois morsels of her tid-bit. A busy litl body wuz she!

A cat uezhualy napt laezily in th barn dor, not eeven bothering herself to scaer th rat hoo ran heer and thaer as

he pleezd.

And

as for

th pig

hoo livd

in th

sti—he

did

not caer whut

happened so long as he cuud eat and gro fat.

ne dae th Litl Red Hen found a Seed. It wuz a Wheet Seed, but th Litl Red Hen wuz so accustomed to bugs and wurms that she supoezd this to be sum nue and perhaps verry delicious kiend of meet. She bit it jently and found that it rezembld a wurm in no wae whot-so-ever as to taest aultho because it wuz long and slender, a Litl Red Hen miet eezily be foold by its apeeranss.

arrying it about, she maed meny inqierys as to whut it miet be. She found it wuz a Wheet Seed and that, if planted, it wuud gro up and when riep it cuud be maed into flour and then into bred.

When she discuverd

that, she knew it aut

to be planted. She wuz

so busy hunting food for

herself and her family

that, nacheraly, she

thaut she aut not

to taek tiem to plant it.

o she thaut of th Pig—upon hoom tiem must hang hevily and of th Cat hoo had nuthing to do, and of th graet fat Rat with his iedl ours, and she called loudly:

“Hoo

wil

plant

th

Seed?”

But th Pig sed, “Not I,”

and th Cat sed, “Not I,”

and th Rat sed, “Not I.”

“Wel, then,” sed th Litl Red Hen, “I wil.”

And she did.

hen she went on with her daily duties thru th long sumer daes, scraching for wurms and feeding her chiks, whiel

th Pig groo fat,

and th Cat groo fat,

and th Rat groo fat,

and th Wheet

groo taul and

redy for

harvest.

o wun dae th Litl Red Hen chanst to noetis how larj th Wheet wuz and that th graen wuz riep, so she ran about calling briskly: “Hoo wil cut th Wheet?”

Th Pig sed, “Not I,”

th Cat sed, “Not I,”

and th Rat sed, “Not I.”

“Wel,

then,”

sed th

Litl

Red Hen,

“I wil.”

And she did.

he got th sickle from amung th farmer's tools in th barn and proceeded to cut off all of th big plant of Wheet.

On th ground lae th niesly cut Wheet, redy to be gatherd and thresht, but th nueest and yellowest and dounyest of Mrs.

Hen's chiks set up a “peep-peep-peeping” in thaer moest vigorus fashon, proclaiming to th wurld at larj, but moest particularly to thaer muther, that she wuz neglekting them.

oor Litl Red Hen! She felt qiet bewildered and hardly knew whaer to turn.

Her atenshon wuz sorly divided between her duty to her children and her duty to th Wheet, for which she felt responsibl.

So, again, in a verry hoepful toen, she called out, “Hoo wil thresh th Wheet?”

But th Pig, with a grunt, sed, “Not I,” and th Cat, with a meeow, sed, “Not I,” and th Rat, with a sqeek, sed, “Not I.”

So th Litl Red Hen, luuking, it must be admited, rather discurejd, sed, “Wel, I wil, then.”

And she did.

Of corss, she had to feed her baebys furst, tho, and when she had goten them all to sleep for thaer afternoon nap, she

went out and thresht th Wheet. Then she called out: “Hoo wil carry th Wheet to th mil to be ground?”

Turning thaer baks with snipy glee, that Pig sed, “Not I,”

and

that

Cat

sed,

“Not I,”

and

that

Rat

sed,

“Not I.”

o th guud Litl Red Hen cuud do nuthing but sae, “I wil then.” And she did.

Carrying th sak of Wheet, she trujd off to th distant mil. Thaer she orderd th Wheet ground into buetiful whiet flour. When th miler brought her th

flour she

waukt

sloely

bak all

th wae

to her oen

barnyard

in her oen

picketty-pecketty

fashon.

he eeven manejd, in spiet of her loed, to cach a niess joosy wurm now and then and had wun left for th baebys when she reached them. Thoes cuning litl fluf-bauls wer so glad to see thaer muther. For th furst tiem, thae reealy appreciated her.

After this reealy strenueus dae Mrs. Hen retierd to her slumbers urlyer than uezhual—indeed, befor th culors caem into th ski to herrald th setting of th sun, her uezhual bedtime our.

She wuud hav liked to sleep laet in th morning, but her chiks, joining in th morning corus of th hen yard, droev away all hoeps of such a lukshery.

Eeven as she sleepily haf oepend wun ie, th thaut caem to her that to-dae that Wheet must, sumhow, be maed into bred.

She wuz not in th habit of maeking bred, aultho, of corss, anyone can maek it if he or she foloes th resipy with caer, and she knew perfectly wel that she cuud do it if nesesaery.

So after her children wer fed and maed sweet and fresh for th dae, she hunted up th Pig, th Cat and th Rat.

Still confident that thae wuud

surely help

her sum dae

she sang out,

“Hoo wil

maek th

bred?”

las for th Litl Red Hen! Wunss

mor her hoeps wer dasht! For

th

Pig

sed,

“Not

I,”

th

Cat

sed,

“Not

I,”

and

th

Rat

sed,

“Not

I.”

o th Litl Red Hen sed wunss mor, “I wil then,” and she did.

Feeling that she miet hav noen all th tiem that she wuud hav to do it all herself, she went and put on a fresh apron and spotless cuuk's cap. Furst of all she set th dough, as wuz proper. When it wuz tiem she brought out th moulding bord and th baeking tins, moulded th bred, divided it into loevs, and put them into th oven to baek. All th whiel th Cat sat laezily by, gigling and chukling.

And cloez at

hand th

vaen Rat

pouderd

his noez

and admierd

himself

in a miror.

In th distanss

cuud be

hurd th long-drawn

snors of

th doezing Pig.

t last th graet moement arrived. A delicious odor wuz wafted upon th autumn breez. Everywhaer th barnyard sitizens snift th aer with deliet.

Th Red Hen ambld in her picketty-pecketty wae tord th sorss of all this exsietment.

lthough she apeerd to be perfectly calm, in reality she cuud oenly with dificulty restraen an impulss to danss and sing, for had she not

dun

all

th

wurk

on

this

wunderful

bred?

maul wunder that she wuz th moest exsieted purson in th barnyard!

She did not noe whether th bred wuud be fit to eat, but—joy of joys!—when th luvly broun loevs caem out of th oven,

thae wer dun to perfection.

Then, probably because she had aqierd th habit, th Red Hen called:

“Hoo

wil

eat

th

Bred?”

All th animals in th barnyard wer woching hungrily and smaking thaer lips in antisipaeshon, and

th Pig sed, “I wil,”

th Cat sed, “I wil,”

th Rat sed, “I wil.”

But th Litl Red Hen sed,

“No, U wun't. I wil.”

And

she

did.
