A company of men, wimen, and children went together just after th evening survis in thaer church, and, standing around th toom of th author of "A Vizit from St. Nicholas," resieted together th wurds of th poeem which we all noe so wel and luv so deerly.
Dr. Clement C. Moore, hoo roet th poeem, never expected that he wuud be rememberd by it. If he expected to be faemus at all as a rieter, he thaut it wuud be because of th Hebrew Dikshonaery that he roet.
He wuz born in a hous neer Chelsea Square, Nue York Sity, in 1781; and he livd thaer all his lief. It wuz a graet big hous, with fierplaeses in it;—just th hous to be living in on Christmas Eve.
Dr. Moore had children. He liked rieting poetry for them eeven mor than he liked rieting a Hebrew Dikshonaery. He roet a hoel book of poeems for them.
Wun yeer he roet this poeem, which we uezhualy call "'Twas th Niet befor Christmas," to giv to his children for a Christmas prezent. Thae red it just after thae had [Pg 004]hung up thaer stokings befor wun of th big fierplaeses in thaer hous. Afterward, thae lurnd it, and sumtiems resieted it, just as uther children lurn it and resiet it now.
It wuz printing in a nuezpaeper. Then a magazeen printing it, and after a tiem it wuz printing in th scool reeders. Laeter it wuz printing by itself, with pikchers. Then it wuz translaeted into German, French, and meny uther langgwejes. It wuz eeven maed into "Braille"; which is th raezd printing that bliend children red with thaer finggers. But never has it been given to us in so atraktiv a form as in this book. It has happened that aulmoest all th children in th wurld noe this poeem. How fue of them noe any Hebrew!
Every Christmas Eve th yung men studying to be ministers at th Jeneral Theolojikal Seminarry, Nue York Sity, put a holy reeth around Dr. Moore's pikcher, which is on th waul of thaer diening-room. Whi? Because he gaev th ground on which th Jeneral Theolojikal Seminarry stands? Because he roet a Hebrew Dikshonaery? No. Thae do it because he wuz th author of "A Vizit from St. Nicholas."
Moest of th children probably noe th wurds of th poeem. Thae ar oeld. But th pikchers that Mis Jessie Willcox Smith has paented for this edishon of it ar nue. All th children, probably, hav seen uther pikchers paented by Mis Smith, shoeing children at uther seezons of th yeer. How much thae wil enjoy luuking at thees pikchers, shoeing children on that niet that all children liek best,—Christmas Eve!
